Bruce commenced his legal career as a para-legal Clerk at the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions in 1988. He was appointed as a Legal Officer in 1990, and was first admitted as a Barrister in New South Wales in 1992. Bruce was called to the Queensland Bar in 1993. During his time at the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions, Bruce prosecuted welfare fraud matters, taxation matters and drug offences. Bruce entered private practice in 1998.
Bruce also acts as an advocacy coach for courses conducted by the Bar Association of Queensland.
As the longest standing member of Lilley Chambers, Bruce is also Head of Chambers. Bruce is a specialist criminal Barrister. He regularly appears in summary matters, trials and appeals in the Magistrates, District, Supreme and Appellate Courts. Bruce’s practice includes prosecuting and defending those charged with criminal offences.
Bruce has extensive experience in both Federal and State Criminal Law, Proceeds of Crime and Regulatory and Enforcement matters. Bruce also has extensive experience in matters under the Dangerous Prisoners (Sexual Offenders) Act 2003, appearing for the Attorney-General and for Respondents at both first instance and in the Court of Appeal. Bruce also appears at Inquests, Commissions of Inquiry, QIRC Hearings and the Mental Health Court.
